The Nails, the Crown & the Lance
When we look upon the crucifix, we see the nails, the crown of thorns and the wound from the lance in Jesus' right side.
Jesus suffered greatly from all of these wounds - save one. The lance that pierced His heart through and through was not felt by Him, but by His mother for Jesus had already died, when He said to the Father, "Into Your Hands, I commend my Spirit."
The man on horseback who plunged the lance with violent force into Jesus' side to make sure He was truly dead, shoved the lance through His ribs straight through His heart and the point came out of the Lord's left breast. The lance pierced Him on a downward angle, as the centurion was on horseback.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Pierced by a Sword
As he did this, the Blessed Virgin Mary, as if the lance had gone through her own heart, felt the sharp point piercing her through and through. She sank into the arms of her friends.
The act of the centurion prevented the executioners from breaking Jesus' legs and arms, as they had just done to the two thieves to hurry their deaths. Scriptures tell us not a bone in Jesus' body was broken.

The Divine Mercy
The blood and water flowing from Jesus' side at His crucifixion is a foreshadow of what happened 1900 years later, when He appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska in Poland with blood and water streaming from His heart for mankind. Yes, the Divine Mercy image we all should know of Jesus Christ, shown in The Warnings section of this website.

The Pieta (Michaelangelo)
As soon as the Body of Christ was taken down from the cross, the men laid Him in His mother's arms, as we see in the famous Pieta sculpture by Michelangelo.
The piercing of Our Blessed Mother's heart fulfilled Simeon's prophecy at Jesus' presentation as a baby at the temple, when Simeon told Mary "a sword will pierce your heart."
Her suffering was extraordinary all of Good Friday, starting with the scourging of her Son. Her suffering was beyond the suffering of any mother who lost her son or daughter. She offers special help and love to these mothers to this very day, and to all who turn to her, love her Son and obey His commandments and teachings.
